Anti virus software will not run

Norton 360 stopped working on machine and will not run even after multiple removal with norton removal tool and reinstalls. When run after about 5 minutes get error "unable to start this norton product please restart computer 8504 4" I then installer Kaspersky internet security but that would run either. I removed the hard drive, put it in a drive caddy and ran Kaspersky on the drive as a second drive in another machine. Kaspersky removed a couple of trojans but had problems removing the last one, failing to delete on restart. I have now resorted to looking to yourselves for some help.
